Honest answer
IELTS or TOEFL for an MS abroad - which one should you take?
Numbers last checked: 2026-07-09
Short answer
Both are accepted almost everywhere in our verified set, so the real decision is about the specific score bar, not the test brand. UK and Australian programs here lean IELTS (6.5-7.0), while some US and Canadian programs quote a TOEFL threshold directly (UofT: 93+, no section below 22). If a program lists both, pick whichever test format you consistently score higher on in practice tests - the score matters, not which exam produced it.
What each program actually asks for
University of Manchester sets the highest bar in our set at IELTS 7.0, followed by UCL and the two Australian programs at IELTS 6.5. University of Toronto is the one program in our set that names a specific TOEFL threshold (93+, no section below 22) rather than IELTS.
New Jersey Institute of Technology and San Jose State University both quote IELTS-or-TOEFL pairs (6.5/79 and 6.5/80 respectively) - typical of US programs, which usually treat the two tests as interchangeable and publish a rough equivalence table.
How to actually decide
Neither test is structurally "easier" for a strong English speaker - the real difference for most Indian applicants is format comfort. IELTS's speaking section is a short face-to-face interview; TOEFL's is recorded responses to a computer. If you get visibly more nervous speaking to a person than a microphone (or vice versa), that alone can be worth more than a marginal difficulty difference between the exams.
Take a full practice test of each before committing - many students score meaningfully differently across the two despite similar English ability, simply due to question style and pacing. Book your real test only after that comparison, not before.
One caution: don't let a passing test score create false confidence about the program's real admit bar. A minimum IELTS/TOEFL score is a gate, not a competitive edge - it filters out applicants below it but rarely differentiates admits from each other above it.
